Walking Above the Clouds at Dayara Bugyal

21 km 3,408 m 3 days

A slow climb through oak forest opened onto one of Uttarakhand’s widest alpine meadows — green, wind-brushed, and almost impossibly quiet.

We left Raithal while the village was still rubbing sleep from its eyes. The first stretch climbed steadily through a forest of oak and rhododendron, where every turn seemed to hold the sound of water somewhere out of sight.

The meadow reveals itself

The trees thinned after Gui. One last bend, one final steep push, and the whole landscape changed. Dayara did not arrive like a viewpoint; it unfolded slowly — a rolling green world with Bandarpoonch floating above the clouds in the distance.

We made camp below Bakaria Top. By evening the wind had dropped, the bells of grazing cattle carried across the meadow, and our little kitchen tent smelled of ginger tea.

Some places ask you to take a photograph. Others ask you to sit down and stay quiet.

Trail notes

  • Start early from Raithal for a cooler forest climb.
  • Carry water beyond Gui; sources can be seasonal.
  • Weather shifts quickly on the open meadow, even in summer.
  • Leave the meadow exactly as you found it.

The descent was faster, but I kept turning around. A wide trail makes leaving easy; a beautiful place does not.
